James was born in Derby, on the 18th March, 1893. He enlisted in Toronto, Ontario, 7th November 1914, stating his occupation as a book keeper, and his next of kin as Frederica Clarke, of 58, White Street, Derby.
He was five feet ten inches in height, had a fair complexion, grey eyes and fair hair, and belonged to the Church of England.
